Meet UGM

The short version of what Ultimate Games Master is, where it came from, and where v2 is heading.

What is Ultimate Games Master?

Ultimate Games Master is one connected home for running tabletop games, playing characters, building campaigns and sharing the action. It brings maps, sheets, dice, sound, puzzles, players, viewers and creators around the same table.

Has UGM really been seven years in the making?

Yes. UGM has been shaped over seven years of building, testing, learning, and listening to real tables. UGM v2 carries those lessons forward in a completely rebuilt experience.

Is everything shown on this website available today?

Not yet. The main product pages show the full UGM v2 platform vision, including capabilities planned after the initial public product. That first public product is being shaped around audited UGM v1 capability parity: Campaign Builder and Campaign Player, interactive character sheets, local and remote network play, realistic 3D physics dice, multi-gameset compatibility, useful spectator views and the supporting table workflows. Roadmap and Dev Updates separate what is working now from what is active, scheduled, or later.

When can I get UGM, and what will it cost?

A public release date and price have not been announced. Roadmap shows the work that must be proven first, and Discord is the best place to hear when testing, availability or pricing genuinely changes.

Getting Started

Choose your place at the table, find the right starting point, and follow the road to release.

Where should I start?

Open Start Here and choose the role that sounds most like you: Game Master, player, creator, streamer, venue, or tester. You will get a clear route without having to learn the whole platform first.

Which platforms is UGM targeting?

UGM targets Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and iPad. Each target must pass its own release checks so the experience suits the screen and device instead of feeling like a squeezed desktop app.

Are Linux, Chromebook and Steam Deck versions planned?

They are recorded as future research: Linux desktop, Chromebook/ChromeOS and Steam Deck/SteamOS each need a feasibility decision and their own real-device checks. They are not current supported-platform or release commitments. Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and iPad remain the current targets.

Will UGM run in a web browser?

Browser access is held future work. The first candidate is a lightweight spectator joining a native GM host and receiving only permitted views, dice and assets. Browser Player participation and the full application are separate later decisions. This website is not a browser version of the UGM application.

Will I need an internet connection to play?

Not for every kind of play. Your campaign is designed to keep working for solo, in-person and local-network games when the internet does not. Online services add remote play, sharing, account features and downloads where needed.

How do I register interest in early access or playtesting?

Join the UGM Discord and visit Early Access. Tell us whether you are a GM, player, creator, streamer, venue, or another kind of table so future test opportunities can match the way you actually play.

How will UGM help me learn or find a reference?

UGM Academy is the planned home for Search, Help and Learn. Look up permitted installed content, open contextual guidance or choose optional courses for using UGM, running a first game, developing GM skills, playing collaboratively and learning a system. Select help Packages individually through Library; no course is compulsory and ordinary lookup is designed to work offline.

Will I need an account just to use UGM?

UGM is designed so permitted offline and in-person play does not depend on an always-online account. The planned Membership Module brings account, membership and ambassador status together, with purchase information when the store opens. Its required installation does not mean a paid subscription is compulsory. Remote services, downloads and sharing may need a connected account.

FAQ category

Playing Your Way

UGM is made for the whole table, from the person running the game to the people watching the story unfold.

Is UGM only for Game Masters?

No. Players get live sheets, GMs get table controls and spectators receive permitted views. Streams and public displays can share the drama without showing private information.

Can I play without a human GM or practise being one?

The planned UGM Session Simulator can act as an automated GM for solo or cooperative adventures, or provide simulated Players while you practise running a Game. Practice uses isolated copies and role-limited knowledge. Academy can add optional coaching. Compatible installed rules and oracles can support offline modes; generative AI depends on supported providers, explicit permission and cost controls.

Can different groups play in the same persistent world?

That is the purpose of the planned optional UGM Shared Worlds Module. A World GM invites other GMs, delegates responsibilities and reviews contributions. Separate tables claim shared missions and leave approved consequences for other parties to discover. Characters can become known through reports and faction reactions, while private notes and unrevealed lore remain protected. First delivery is an invited private world; larger, continuously available communities are a separate later expansion.

Will Shared Worlds work for groups that meet at different times?

The design accommodates weekly and monthly groups without making another table’s attendance a condition for play. The World GM chooses how time advances, with clear mission windows and protected adventure continuity. Accepted adventures can continue offline, but claiming missions and publishing shared outcomes require a connection and any necessary approval. Characters can transfer between eligible tables with GM admission, with one active adventure commitment per Character in that world.

Can a dice roll stay secret while everyone sees it roll?

That is planned. The roller and GM see the values; other players and viewers see question marks. For a GM-initiated secret roll, only that GM sees the values. This privacy must also hold in results and reconnects; secret-roll delivery is still on the roadmap.

Can I use UGM in person, remotely, or at an event?

That is the intended experience. UGM is being designed for home tables, local-network play, remote and hybrid groups, clubs, shops, conventions, libraries, demos and pop-up sessions. A local network can keep a venue table moving even when public Wi-Fi is unreliable.

How does UGM keep secrets and private information safe?

Views and permissions are designed around each person at the table. GM notes, hidden map details, private player information, viewer output and stream-safe presentation can stay separate instead of relying on everyone to look away.

Create & Customise

Build for your own group, adapt what already exists, or make something other tables can enjoy.

Is UGM tied to one game system?

No. Play the games you love, adapt the rules for your table or build something completely your own. UGM does not force every game into the same assumptions.

Can I use optional rules without creating another Gameset?

Yes, in the planned complete experience. The GM can enable, disable, combine and customise Gameset variants for each Campaign while preserving its base Gameset. Built-in, user-authored and installed variants use the same model. Save reusable named presets, with the chosen versions and settings retained separately for each Campaign. Variants affect their declared Character creation, progression, calculations and sheets; review existing Character impacts before applying changes.

Can I load new Gameset variants through Packages?

That is now part of the product plan. A signed, data-only Package can contain one variant or a collection. Library installs it; the GM explicitly activates and configures compatible options in Build. Installation alone does not change a Campaign’s rules. Dependency and conflict checks, reviewed updates and recovery protect existing Campaigns and customisations. Packages cannot download executable scripts. This workflow is planned; follow Roadmap and Dev Updates for delivery evidence.

Can I build and share worlds or campaigns?

That is part of the intended creator experience. It covers worlds, lore, campaigns, quests, reusable templates, game rules and content packs. Sharing and export keep sources and requirements visible. Shared Worlds adds collaboration between invited GMs: permission to run a mission is separate from permission to establish new lore, and player-originated contracts go through their table GM and any required world approver.

Can I change layouts and themes?

Yes, in the intended complete experience. UGM Command and custom themes use the same package and widget engine, so layouts can vary across sheets, menus and live views while permissions, actions and saved work stay consistent. Theme Studio extends this into creator authoring. Current implementation and real-device acceptance are tracked in Dev Updates.

Does UGM still support paper, miniatures, and physical dice?

Absolutely—that is central to the product direction. UGM is a companion to the table, not a demand to replace it. Print-ready sheets, handouts, references, table cards, standees and physical-roll entry are designed to sit alongside screens and shared displays.

Modules, Packages & Library

Understand the difference between new abilities, the content used inside them, and the place that keeps everything organised.

Is Living Maps required or a default module?

No. Living Maps is an optional UGM Module, alongside the other specialised tools. Core provides the shared foundation. Shared Worlds can use Living Maps to present permitted world changes, but it does not require it.

What is the difference between a module and a package?

A Module adds a tool, such as Living Maps, character sheets, viewer screens, sound, puzzles, logs or creator tools. A Package brings ready-to-use content for those tools, such as a campaign, map set, theme, sound pack, quest, dice set or template.

How do Modules, Packages, Library, and Build fit together?

Modules provide the tools. Packages provide ready-to-use content. Library keeps your material, updates, backups, sources and requirements organised. Build is where you adapt it for a game, campaign, character or table.

What happens when a module or package is missing?

UGM explains what is missing and what it affects. A missing module can remove an ability; a missing package means particular content needs attention. The relevant Library or table view should guide you towards installing, relinking, replacing, or restoring it.

How will I know where shared content came from?

Game setups, Packages and shared material can show the author, source, version, language, compatible UGM version, anything else they need and the licence. Optional tools such as AI add-ons stay clearly labelled, under your control and off unless you choose to enable them.

Updates, Support & Community

Follow the work, check online services, share your ideas, and join the people helping UGM grow.

Where can I follow development?

Dev Updates records dated, evidence-backed product movement and the exact block being built now. Roadmap shows the four product horizons, current milestone sequence and working development targets through parity, initial public v2 and the later full-platform vision.

What does the Service Status page show?

Service Status reports the public health of the UGM website, downloads and content delivery, plus the online services used for sign-in and remote play. The help inside UGM gives you a separate pre-game check for your own table.

Where is the main UGM community?

Discord is the main place to join the conversation, follow the build, share table ideas, and register interest in testing. It is where we want GMs, players, creators, streamers, and venues to meet.

Can I submit content, feedback, or a UGM story?

You can start a conversation on Discord about original ideas, feedback or real table stories. Formal submissions are not open yet, and a conversation does not give permission to use your work. Any later publication needs review of rights, privacy, wording, media and attribution.
